Nanning was a place of Baiyue in ancient times. In 318, the first year of Daxing in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it was established as the county seat. Since then, Nanning has a history of 1700 years. In 632, it changed its name to Yongzhou and set up the Yongzhou governor's office, hence Nanning's abbreviation "Yong". In 1324, it changed its name to Nanning Road, which means peace in southern Xinjiang, Nanning got its name from here.

In the fourth year of Wude (620) of Tang Dynasty, nanjinzhou was set up in Xuanhua county and led by Xuanhua County, where counties and prefectures coexisted. In the fifth year of Wude, Xuanhua county was divided into Xuanhua and Jinxing counties, which were subordinate to southern Jinzhou. After Yonghui (650-655), the five prefectures of Guangzhou, Guizhou (governing today's Guilin), Yongzhou (governing today's Nanning), Rongzhou (governing today's Rongxian county) and Annam were subordinate to the five Lingnan prefectures and were named as the five Lingnan prefectures and were stationed in Guangzhou as the governor of Guangzhou. In the first year of Tianbao (742), Yongzhou was changed into langning county. In the first year of Qianyuan (758), LONGNING county was rebuilt as Yongzhou. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Nanning was the land of the Southern Han Dynasty, still belonging to Yongzhou and returning to Chu.
After the Song Dynasty unified the whole country, Yongzhou was under the jurisdiction of Guangnan West Road, with Xuanhua county and Wuyuan County under its jurisdiction. Nanning was still the governing seat of Yongzhou and Xuanhua county.
From the Yuan Dynasty to the 16th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1279), Yongzhou was changed into Yongzhou Road, and now Nanning is the office of the road manager. In the Qing Dynasty, Guangxi was changed into Guangxi Province and its capital was located in today's Guilin city. Nanning is not only governed by Nanning government, but also by Zuojiang road and Xuanhua county.

Xuanhua county was abolished in the first year of the Republic of China (1912) and was directly under the Guangxi military government as the director of Nanning government. Later, it was renamed the Guangxi provincial government. In April, 1943, the former eighth and ninth districts were merged into the Fourth District, and the office of the Commissioner of administrative supervision was set up in Nanning.
During the period of the Republic of China, Nanning moved to the province twice: the first time: in October 1912, the provisional Parliament of Guangxi Province passed a resolution, and the capital of Guangxi Province was changed to Nanning.
