In the sixth year of emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty (201 BC), Yuzhang county was set up to govern Nanchang County, and 18 counties were under its jurisdiction. At the end of the Western Han Dynasty (9-23 years), Yuzhang county was changed into Jiujiang County, and three counties in southern Jiangxi were subordinate to it.

In the first year of Chunhua (990), Qianzhou originally governed Nankang, Dayu and Shangyou counties. Another Nan'an army was set up to govern Dayu. Qianzhou led 10 counties, which was the beginning of the establishment of two administrative regions in Gannan.
In 1121, Longnan county was renamed Qiannan.
In the 23rd year of Shaoxing (1153), Dong Deyuan took the word "Qian" as the head of the tiger, and Qianzhou was named "Hutou city", which was not a good name. He changed the name of Qianzhou to Ganzhou (taking the meaning of Zhang and Gong, and retaining the "Wen" at the bottom of the word "Qian", so it was called GaN). In 1276, Jiangnan West Road was changed into the province of xingzhongshu in Jiangxi Province. Ganzhou and Nan'an armies were subordinate to Jiangxi Province.
In 1277, Ganzhou and Nan'an army were changed to Ganzhou road and Nan'an road respectively, and they were subordinate to Lingxian County as before.
In 1365, Ganzhou and Nan'an roads were changed into prefectures.
In 1385, Jiangxi was divided into five roads. Ganzhou and Nan'an belonged to Lingbei road.

In the seventh year of Hongzhi (1494), the governor's Court of Southern Jiangxi was set up in Ganzhou, which was called Qianyuan.

In the 12th year of Zhengde (1517), Chongyi county was set up under the jurisdiction of Shangyou, Nankang and Dayu counties, which belonged to Nanan Prefecture. So far, Nanan Prefecture led four counties: Dayu, Nankang, Shangyou and Chongyi.
In the 36th year of Jiajing period (1557), four roads were set up to guard Lingbei, Lingdong, Lingnan and Zhangnan respectively, which were unified in the Qianyuan. In the third year of Longqing (1569), part of the jurisdiction of Anyuan County, Xinfeng County and Longnan county was set up as Dingnan County, subordinate to Ganzhou Prefecture.
