[plant morphology] Hedyotis diffusa

Herbs perennial, roots numerous, filiform. Erect, white to 65 cm tall, villous. The basal leaves are rosette shaped, short petiolate, elliptic or nearly spatulate, 5-10 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm wide, with shallow teeth or nearly entire margin, white villi on both sides, and usually not carved off after anthesis; the middle leaves are ovate elliptic, sessile, and half amplexicaul at the base; the apical leaves are lanceolate or linear lanceolate, apex long pointed, amplexicaul at the base. Inflorescence 3-9, arranged in corymbose or pseudoumbelliform; involucre tubular, bracts linear lanceolate, 8 mm long, apex acuminate, base and back with white hairs, margin membranous; involucre base without bracts; margin ligulate, yellow, female, tongue 10 mm long, 4-5 mm wide, apex 2-3-toothed; central tubular, yellow, bisexual, about 3 mm long, apex 5-toothed Split. Achene elliptic, ca. 4 mm long, both ends truncate, with longitudinal ribs and fine hairs; corolla white, ca. 7 mm long. The flowering period is from April to May.

Born in Tangbian, roadside wetland. It is distributed in Northeast, East and southwest China.

[pharmacological action] in vitro, 3 G (crude drug) / ml of Cynanchum cuspidatum has inhibitory effect on leukemia cells (methylene blue method). Pyrrolidine alkaloids are commonly found in plants of this genus, which are toxic to the liver and have anti-tumor effects. There are also reports or studies on its hepatocarcinogenic effects. The chemical structure of cynoglossine is saturated, that is, there is no double bond at position 1 and 2. It has no toxic effect on liver, but it has atropine like effect, but its effect is 20-30 times weaker than atropine. It has inhibitory effect on the central nervous system, and can enhance the central inhibitory effect of small dose magnesium sulfate. It can also reduce blood pressure. Its mechanism of action may also be central.
