Wild cotton root

(materia medica of Southern Yunnan)

[source] it is the root of Gossypium hirsutum, a Ranunculaceae plant.

[collection] collect and dig in spring or autumn, remove the stems and leaves, and dry them in the sun.

[medicinal material] the dry root is slightly cylindrical and often twisted, with a total length of about 10-25 cm and a diameter of 0.6-2 cm. Most of the commodities have been broken, brown to purple brown in appearance, rough in surface, with longitudinal concave cracks, occasionally with branch root marks, and the outer skin sometimes falls off, exposing the yellow wood which is split and flaky. The head of the root is slightly inflated, with residual petiole base at the top, densely covered with white woolly hairs. It is brittle and easy to break; the skin of the section is light brown, the wood is yellow, the ray color is deep, and there are more than ten groups of bundles in the duct part, arranged radially. The central part and ray part of the root are usually fissured. Weak Qi, bitter taste.

Produced in Yunnan, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hunan and other places.

[selection] 1. To treat malaria: seven to nine wild cotton roots, eight liang of Changshan, one liter of soybean. Cook together, remove the medicine, dry the soybeans and grind them into fine powder, mix the wine into pills and realgar into clothes. Take ten pills before malaria.
