[clinical application] treatment of hypercholesterolemia

The purified silkworm pupa oil was used to make pills (each pill contains 150 mg linoleic acid and 0.5 mg vitamin E) for oral administration, 3 times a day, 6 pills each time, 4 weeks as a course of treatment. Thirty one patients with hypercholesterolemia (230 mg%) were observed. Before treatment, the average serum cholesterol level was 274.35 ± 63.11 mg% (231-450 mg%). After 4-12 weeks of treatment, the average serum cholesterol level decreased by 50.23 mg%, among them, 27 patients whose serum cholesterol level decreased below 230 mg%. According to the observation, about half of the patients showed a decrease in serum cholesterol by the fourth week of treatment. It seems that the therapeutic effect will be improved by extending the course of treatment to 8-12 weeks. During the course of medication, one case of coronary heart disease with unexplained microscopic hematuria was found to have increased urine volume, and no other important adverse reactions were found. From the results of 31 cases of β - lipoprotein examination and 10 cases of neutral fat examination, we can see the difference before and after treatment. Six patients with fatty liver and three patients with diabetes mellitus complicated with hypercholesterolemia showed a decrease in serum cholesterols to varying degrees after taking the medicine; three patients with abnormal alanine aminotransferase (100 units) turned to normal after taking the medicine.
