Annual herbs. Culms erect, solitary or a few tufted, 60-120 cm high, with nodes and dense bristles on nodes. Leaf sheath loose, verrucose; ligule about 1 mm long, with cilia about 2 mm long; leaf blade linear lanceolate, 10-30 cm long, 1.5 cm wide, pilose or glabrous, margin often rough. Panicle, open or close, mature drooping, about 30 cm long, branches angular, margin with rough bristles, lower bare, upper dense branchlets and spikelets; spikelets ovate elliptic, about 4-5 mm long; glumes papery. The first glume is 1 / 2-2 / 3 of the spikelet, apex pointed or conic, with 5-7 veins, the second glume is as long as the spikelet, mostly 11 veins; the first lemma is similar to the second glume; the palea is membranous, shorter, 1.5-2 mm long, apex often concave. Caryopsis round or elliptic, smooth and shiny, ca. 3 mm long, milky white, yellowish or red. Seeds white, yellow or brown, sticky or not sticky.
Most of them are cultivated in North China and Northwest China. Generally, it can be divided into two types: millet with hairy stalk and partial panicle and sticky seed; millet without hairy stalk and scattered panicle and non sticky seed.
The root (Panicum miliaceum), stem (Panicum miliaceum), seed (Panicum miliaceum) and stem (Panicum miliaceum) of this plant are also used for medicine. Please refer to the special section for details.

[chemical composition] husked millet contains 2.86% ash, 6.25% crude fiber, 15.86% crude protein and 59.65% starch. The oil content was 5.07%, of which palmitic acid was the main fatty acid, and tetradecanoic acid, heptadecanoic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, isolinoleic acid, etc. Proteins include albumin, globulin, glutenin, gliadin and so on. Millet also contains millet element.
