Lion Village

Shizi Township, located in the southeast of Pingtung County, Taiwan Province, is a local unit.

Origin of township name

During the Dutch rule, the Han people who moved from the mainland to the south of Taiwan for cultivation gathered four nearby residents to raft to the sea for fishing. When they came to the middle of Shizi village near the junction of Fangshan Township, it was late and they wanted to land on the shore for the night. When they came ashore, there was a lion with its mouth open and sharp teeth. It looked like it was going to eat people. At the moment, the four of them were so scared that they turned around and ran away. On the third day, the four men went to the beach where the lion appeared. When they came ashore, they met the same situation as last time and turned back. After returning home, the four of them decided to eradicate the man eating lion. A week later, seven or eight strong men gathered to carry weapons to the place where the lion appeared. As soon as these young men came ashore, they found no trace of the lion, only a lion like mountain, so they called the mountain "Shizitou mountain". After the restoration of Taiwan, the government named this place shizixiang. On the one hand, it took the shape of a mountain that looked like a lion, and on the other hand, it hoped that the residents would live a vigorous life. The Shizitou mountain was approved by the shizixiang representative meeting, and the project was reported as a protected tourist area.

Historical development

The historical development of shizixiang can be traced back to the period before the Dutch occupation of Taiwan. It is the settlement site of chaoboobol, a branch of Paiwan nationality. According to local elders' legends, NEISHI has massive lion like rocks, so it is called shizitoushan, and the local village is also called shizitoushe. In 1895, Taiwan ceded to Japan during the Sino Japanese War of 1895, and now there are three villages in shizixiang, namely Caopu, Danlu and Zhukeng The rest of the villages are scattered in the Fangshan Valley, which belongs to the Tibetan land of Hengchun County, Kaohsiung Prefecture. Police stations are set up in each village to manage education, health and other administrative affairs. After the recovery of Taiwan in the Second World War in 1945, the police stations in each village in Shizi area were changed into police stations, and Shizi Township Office was set up next year, which is subordinate to Chaozhou County, Kaohsiung In 1947, the Prefecture was transferred to Hengchun district. In 1950, the national government moved to Taiwan to adjust the administrative region of Taiwan and implement local autonomy, so Pingtung county government was established. It was transferred to Shizi township of Pingtung County and has jurisdiction over eight villages.

It is the earliest producing area of Aiwen mango, and the selling price is often better than other producing areas. The planting area of Sansu is 586 hectares, distributed among neiwen, Caopu and Danlu tribes, with an annual output of about 117200 kg. It is the second day's agricultural product of the township, second only to mango. The planting areas are distributed on both sides of Taijiu railway. The climate is cool and humid, which is very suitable for the growth of Saussurea frutescens. Therefore, Saussurea frutescens is planted in the forest in this township, which is different from the greenhouse cultivation in other places, and it does not need land reclamation and preparation, and does not damage the risk of soil and water conservation. Watermelon, the third largest product of the township, is planted on both banks of Fangshan River and Fenggang river. The Maliba hunting festival held in shizixiang since 2003 is an annual event. The name comes from a Paiwan mountain pig warrior who sacrificed himself in order to save his people's lives.
