Wenquan County Wenquan county belongs to Bortala Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is located in the northwest of Xinjiang, the upper reaches of Bortala River Valley, the northern foot of the Western Tianshan Mountains and the western edge of Junggar basin. It is adjacent to Bole City in the East, Zhentao mountain in the South and Huocheng County in the south. It is adjacent to the Republic of Kazakhstan in the West and North by kongloebo mountain and the western section of alatao mountain. The county is 139.4 km long from east to west and 64.8 km wide from north to south. The arable land area is 490000 mu, the grassland area is 6190000 mu, and the forest area is 551000 mu. The climate here is warm in winter and cool in summer. It is a continental arid climate with an average annual temperature of 3.6 ℃. The total annual runoff of surface water is 800 million cubic meters, the groundwater reserve is 310 million cubic meters, and the theoretical water energy reserve is 279000 kilowatts.
In December 2018, Wenquan county was awarded the National Climate symbol of climate ecology.
In July 2020, the National Patriotic Health Association confirmed Wenquan County as the national health county in 2019.
Historical evolution
Hot spring, a free translation of Mongolian "a ri Xiang", is named because there are many hot springs in the county. Also known as bogdar, Mongolian, meaning "behind the mountain.".
In Qin and Han Dynasties, it was the territory of Hun and Wusun. Sui and Tang dynasties belong to an Turkic area. After the Qing Emperor Qianlong calmed down the Junggar rebellion, he sent the old eight banners of Chahar tribe of Mongolia to garrison in this area. In Qing Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Zhili hall in Jinghe.
In 1938 (the 27th year of the Republic of China), Bole county set up a hot spring Administration Bureau here. In 1941 (the 30th year of the Republic of China), it was changed to Wenquan County, which belongs to Ili administrative region.
After 1954, it belongs to Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture.

Wenquan county has a total area of 5881 square kilometers, of which the mountainous area accounts for 71% of the total area of the county. The county is surrounded by mountains on three sides and borders on the Republic of Kazakhstan. The border line is 242.6 km long, connecting 33 outer mountain passes. Two thirds of the border line of Bozhou is under the control of Wenquan county. The county has 565900 mu of arable land, 6.01 million mu of grassland and 1.514 million mu of forest.
