Wangyi District, located in the middle of Tongchuan City, belongs to Tongchuan City, Shaanxi Province. It is the former political, economic, financial, cultural and business center of Tongchuan City, and also an important part of the northern urban area (old urban area) of Tongchuan.

Evolution of organizational system
Tongguan county was set up in 446, the seventh year of Taiping Zhenjun in the Northern Wei Dynasty. The county government is located near Gaoping Village, Wangyi street, Wangyi District, and belongs to Beidi County of Yongzhou. In 575, Tongguan county was changed into Tongguan county. From the Sui Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, although there were many changes in membership, they basically followed the system of Tongguan county. In July 1946, Tongguan county was renamed Tongchuan county. On April 5, 1958, Tongchuan county was abolished and Tongchuan City was established.
Wangyi district was formerly known as Tongchuan City. On April 5, 1980, with the approval of the people's Government of Shaanxi Province and the approval of the State Council, Tongchuan City set up people's governments in urban and suburban areas, both of which belong to the county-level system, and officially opened their offices on May 1. At the same time, Tongchuan City Committee of the CPC approved the establishment of Tongchuan City Committee of the CPC. On February 18, 2000, with the approval of the State Council, the general office of Shaanxi Provincial People's government issued a notice of renaming: Tongchuan City was renamed as Wangyi district. On April 18, the district government held a listing ceremony, officially renamed Wangyi district.
On July 28, 2003, Wangyi district Party committee and government moved into the office building of the former municipal Party committee and government of Hongqi Street.
On September 26, 2010, Wangjiahe town government changed its name to Wangjiahe sub district office.

Qishui river is a main channel running through the center of Wangyi District, which is a tributary of Shichuan River in Weihe River system. The river is 16.7 km long and the average width of the riverbed is 25 M. There are eight primary tributaries, including Shijiahe, Xiaohegou, Wangjiahe, xinchuangou, hongyangou, Datonggou, Lijiagou and Wayaogou. They flow from Qingnian Road to yaozhouyao Museum, and flow through Qingnian Road office, Qiyi Road office, Hongqijie office, Taoyuan office and Huangbao town government, with an average annual runoff of 7.5436 million cubic meters. Most of the shallow groundwater in Wangyi district is bicarbonate type low salinity water, colorless, transparent, odorless and tasteless, with good water quality, which is suitable for domestic and production water.

The main mineral resources are coal, limestone, sandstone, ceramic clay, oil shale, brick clay, etc. Limestone for calcium carbide is the only one in the province, and the reserves of refractory clay and loess for cement are in the forefront of the province. Among them, coal and oil shale are the main energy resources in Wangyi District, with abundant proved reserves. Oil shale is mainly distributed in zhoujiahe village, Wangjiahe town. It is a part of oil shale in motiangou of Yaozhou District and Hejiafang of suburb. The main metal deposits are bauxite, which coexists with clay minerals and generally occurs in the upper part of Ordovician limestone at the bottom of No. 10 coal seam. The exploration project was initiated by team 712 of Northwest Nonferrous Geological Exploration Bureau in heichiyuan area. There are many kinds of non-metallic minerals with abundant reserves.
