The original name of Zhouzhi County is Jue county. Jue is a borrowed word with the meaning of Zhouxuan and zigzag, and the meaning of zigzag is its extended meaning. Li Jifu of Tang Dynasty said in Yuanhe county annals: "Shanqu is called Zhe, Shuiqu is called Zhe, because it is named after the county.". The name of Jue (Zhouzhi) has been used for more than 2000 years, which is one of the oldest county names in Shaanxi Province. In 1964, the State Council promulgated the "simplified Chinese characters general table · schedule" and changed it to Zhouzhi County.

In the early years of the Yuan Dynasty (1264-1278), Hengzhou was abolished and Zhongnan county was merged into Jue County, belonging to Fengxiang Prefecture.
