Gejiu Gejiu is a city under the jurisdiction of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, China. It is located between 102 ° 54 ′ E and 103 ° 25 ′ E and 23 ° 01 ′ N and 23 ° 36 ′ n. "Gejiu" evolved from the transliteration of "guozuo" in Yi language, which means the place where buckwheat seeds are planted and buckwheat rice is eaten.
Gejiu is 280 km away from Kunming and 200 km away from Vietnam. The city has a land area of 1587 square kilometers and a total population of 453300, including 309500 urban residents. The level of urbanization is 68.30%. The built-up area of the city is 12 square kilometers and the urban resident population is 180000. There are more than 120000 ethnic minorities, including Yi, Zhuang, Hui, Miao, Dai and Hani. By the end of 2017, the registered residence population of the city was 384363.
Gejiu is a metallurgical industrial city which mainly produces tin and produces lead, zinc, copper and other non-ferrous metals. It is a well-known "tin capital" at home and abroad. It is the largest tin production base in China and the earliest in the world.

Historical evolution
The Western Han Dynasty belongs to the ancient county of Ben, Yizhou county. The Eastern Han Dynasty belongs to the ancient county of Ben in Yizhou county.
Shuhan of the Three Kingdoms belongs to Xinggu County of Yizhou. The Western Jin Dynasty belongs to ningzhou Xinggu county and bengu county. From the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Southern Dynasties, Liang belonged to Bingu County, Liangshui County, ningzhou. The Northern Zhou Dynasty belonged to Nanning.
The Sui Dynasty was under the jurisdiction of Nanning Prefecture. In the early Tang Dynasty, it belonged to jiannandaolizhou, tangnanzhao to Tonghai Dudu, and song Dali to Xiushan County.
In 1276, Mengzi County was set up, which belongs to Lin'an road. Gejiu is one of the five townships in Mengzi County. It is also one of the upper six of the twelve Li in Mengzi County, which is called Gejiu Li.
In the Ming Dynasty, yilinzhuang was under the jurisdiction of Mengzi County, Lin'an Prefecture.
In 1707, a factory was set up in Gejiu, which collected taxes on tin and silver.
Guangxu 11 years (1885), set up the old hall, the establishment of the yamen, specializing in mining.
In April 1913, Gejiu hall was changed into Gejiu County, which was subordinate to Mengzi road.
In 1929, it was directly under Yunnan Province.
In 1942, it was the third administrative supervision district (in Jianshui County).

In 1949, the Fifth District moved to Gejiu county.
In 1950, it belonged to Mengzi district. On January 27, 1950, Gejiu county and its neighboring villages on both sides of the Red River were assigned to the newly established Xinmin county.
On January 10, 1951, the Government Affairs Council approved the abolition of Gejiu county and the establishment of Gejiu City, which is under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province. The area under its jurisdiction is mainly mining area, and Baohua District, Tianxi district and one of the upper districts of Gejiu county are classified as mining area, one of Datun District of Mengzi County is classified as mining area, and Yunhe District of Gejiu county is incorporated into Mengzi County.
On September 16, 1958, it was transferred to Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and the people's Committee of the Prefecture was moved from Mengzi County to Gejiu City.
On October 20, 1958, the 81st plenary session of the State Council decided to abolish Mengzi County and put all the areas of the former Mengzi County into Gejiu City. Kaiyuan county was abolished, and all six districts, four townships in seven districts and one township in five districts of Kaiyuan county were assigned to Wenshan County, while the rest areas were assigned to Gejiu City.
On September 13, 1960, the 103rd plenary session of the State Council adopted that the organizational system of Kaiyuan and Mengzi counties, which were merged into Gejiu City and abolished, should be restored, and their administrative regions should remain unchanged as before, and Kaiyuan and Mengzi counties should be led by Gejiu City.
On February 14, 1961, the State Council approved that Kaiyuan and Mengzi counties, which were originally led by Gejiu, should be put under the direct leadership of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture.
In 1988, Gejiu was designated as a city under separate state planning in Yunnan Province, exercising the power of prefecture level economic management. On January 29, 2003, the government of Honghe Prefecture moved from Gejiu City to Mengzi County.
In 1997, Gejiu City governed one street, eight towns and four townships: urban street, Shadian Town, Xicheng Town, Jijie Town, Datun Town, Zhadian Town, LAOCHANG Town, Kafang Town, mansuo Town, Jiasha Township, Baohe Township, ruodean Township and Huangcaoba township.
In 2001, the city has jurisdiction over one street, eight towns and four townships: urban street, Xicheng Town, Jijie Town, Datun Town, Zhadian Town, LAOCHANG Town, Kafang Town, mansuo Town, Shadian Town, ruodean Town, Jiasha Town, Baohe town and Huangcaoba town.
On April 25, 2003, Huangcaoba Township and Manhao town in Gejiu City were abolished, and Manhao town was merged and established. The town government was stationed in the original Manhao town government.
In 2005, Gejiu City abolished Jijie Town, ruodian Township and Zhadian Town, merged and established Jijie Town, and the town government was stationed in yuanjijie town.
In 2019, Gejiu City in Yunnan Province will withdraw Shadian town and Datun town and set up Shadian street and Datun street.

There are 420 kinds of trees, 11 kinds of economic forests, 5 kinds of bamboos, more than 200 kinds of wild medicinal materials and more than 270 kinds of wild flowers. There are 9 kinds of rare plants, such as Yunnan Jinhua tea, Wangtian tree, Alsophila spinulosa, Dongzong, spicea yunnanensis, Elaeagnus mollis, Cycas polybifida, and 11 kinds of rare animals, such as gibbon, clouded leopard, musk deer, otter, lizard, etc. Among them, Honghe Duoqi cycas, known as "living fossil", is unique in manguo tropical rain forest.
