Its geographical coordinates are 101 ° 39 ′~ 102 ° 22 ′ E and 23 ° 18 ′~ 23 ° 55 ′ n. It is adjacent to Shiping County in the East, Honghe County in the south, Mojiang County in the West and Xinping County in the north. The county is 64.5 kilometers long from north to South and 71.5 kilometers wide from east to west, with a total area of 2858 square kilometers. The mountainous area is 2766.54 square kilometers, and the dam area is 91.46 square kilometers. The county people's government is located in Lijiang Town, 380 meters above sea level, 216 kilometers away from Kunming, the provincial capital, and 128 kilometers away from Hongta District, Yuxi City.

Before 109 B.C., jinyuanjiang county was a territory of the ancient Dai state "mengdaguang" (Chinese translation of "Ailao state").
It was named luopandian in Shu Han Dynasty and Western Jin Dynasty, belonging to Xinggu county.
In Sui and Tang Dynasties, it was named Butou, belonging to Lizhou.
In Song Dynasty, Dali was named as Yuanbu and luobidian, belonging to Weiyuan.
Yuanzhi Yuanyuan year (1264) name compass department, belongs to Yuanjiang Road governance.
In 1265, it was changed into Yuanjiang mansion.
In 1288, Yuanjiang road was rebuilt.

Yuanjiang is located in the low latitude plateau and has a monsoon climate. In winter and summer, it is affected by two different kinds of atmospheric circulation. In winter (i.e. from November to April in the dry season), it is affected by the dry and warm air flow in North Africa and northern India and the dry and cold air flow from the north to the south. The air is dry and warm, with less precipitation, fast evaporation, more sunny days and sufficient sunshine. In summer half year (i.e. rainy season from May to October), affected by the warm and humid air flow in the southwest of Indian Ocean and the warm and humid air flow in the southeast of Pacific Ocean, the atmosphere is warm in winter and hot in summer, dry and humid in summer and autumn, obvious in dry and wet seasons, and rainy and hot in the same season.

It has formed a unique phenomenon that "a mountain is divided into four seasons, with different days in between", "cotton padded clothes on the top of the mountain, sandwich clothes on the hillside, and single clothes on the foot of the mountain".
