Yanyuan County belongs to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. It is located on the southeast edge of Qinghai Tibet Plateau and the West Bank of the lower reaches of Yalong River in Sichuan Province. Its geographical coordinates are: east longitude 100 ° 42 ′ 09 ″ - 102 ° 03 ′ 44 ″, north latitude 27 ° 06 ′ 31-28 ° 16 ′ 31 ″. The county is 133.6 kilometers long from east to west and 129.4 kilometers wide from north to south, with a total area of 8398.6 square kilometers.

In 2017, the GDP of Yanyuan County was 8130.03 million yuan. On February 18, 2020, the people's Government of Sichuan Province approved Yanyuan County to withdraw from poverty-stricken counties. On September 22, 2020, it won the "harvest Cup" of food production in Sichuan Province in 2019.
Historical evolution
During the Shang and Zhou Dynasties and the Warring States period, it was the nomadic land of yizuo people in Southwest China.
In the sixth year of Yuanding (111) of the Western Han Dynasty, Dazuo county and Dazuo county were officially established, which were subordinate to Yue county.
After Zhuge Liang's southern expedition in 225, Dazuo county was merged into Dingzuo county.
Dingzuo county was still set up in Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties.
In the fifth year of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Dingzuo county was changed into Dingzuo Town, which was subordinate to Yanzhou.

In the 22nd year of Zhenguan (648), the Tang Dynasty set up Kunming County in songwaiyi. In the first year of Zhide, Kunming and Changming were occupied by Tubo.
In the 16th year of Tang Guanyuan, the Tang Dynasty recovered Kunming county and abolished the administration of Changming county.
Six years after Xiantong, Nanzhao occupied Kunming county and changed it into Xiangcheng County.
In Dali period, Xiangcheng County was abandoned and was controlled by the tribe Ruku, which belonged to Shanju county.
In the 14th year of the Yuan Dynasty, if it was attached to the Treasury Department, a salt well was set up to manage thousands of households. In the 10th year of the Yuan Dynasty, Jinzhou was added. In the 17th year of the Zhiyuan Dynasty, Yanjing was changed to run Yanzhou, and the Department of Li Li was set up as Pudong Prefecture, which was subordinate to Deping road. In the 27th year of the Zhiyuan Dynasty, the government established the Baixing Prefecture and merged Pule and Runyan into the state. Jinzhou was changed into Jinxian county and attached to Baixing Prefecture.
In the 15th year of Hongwu (1382) of Ming Dynasty, boxing government was transferred to Yunnan Province.
In 1391, the 24th year of Hongwu, Baixing Prefecture was established. In 1392, baixingzhou was abolished and the military and civilian commanding Department of yanjingwei was set up. It was under the jurisdiction of zuoqianhusuo in Dachong River and the Chief Secretary of mala.
In the early Qing Dynasty, salt well guards were still set up. In 1728, yanjingwei was set up in Yanyuan County, and Yanbian hall was set up in asola, which was under the jurisdiction of Yanyuan. The Department of appeasement was set up in guabie, Yanyuan County.
In 1912, Yanyuan County was still established, and Yanzhong (Youjun Town, Xichang City) was under the jurisdiction of Yanyuan County.

In 1950, Yanyuan belonged to Xichang district.
In 1952, Yanyuan County was moved from Weicheng to Yanjing.
