Emeishan, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province, is managed by Leshan City. It is located in the southwest edge of Sichuan Basin, bordering the West Sichuan Plain in the northeast and connecting the big and small Liangshan mountains in the southwest. The city covers an area of 1183 square kilometers, with jurisdiction over 2 streets, 10 towns and 1 township.
Emei was originally located in Shu Kingdom. It was under the jurisdiction of Nan'an county (today's Leshan City) of Qianwei county from the Shu Han Dynasty to the Jin Dynasty and the southern and Northern Dynasties. In the first year of Baoding, Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty officially established pingqiang county. In the third year of kaihuang of the Sui Dynasty, it was renamed Emei county. Historically, it belonged to Meishan County.
Emeishan City is named after the mountain. It is a world natural and cultural heritage, a national 5A scenic spot and one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. It is known as the "fairy mountain Buddha kingdom", "plant kingdom" and "Geological Museum", forming seven core cultures of "Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, food, tea, martial arts and medicine". At present, there are three national key cultural relics protection units and one national intangible cultural heritage.

It gets its name because it is located at the eastern foot of Mount Emei. Emei is named after da'e mountain and er'e mountain. It is said that Emei is a moth eyebrow. Evolution of organizational system
Emeishan City has a history of more than 2600 years. It was the land of Shu in ancient times. From the Shu Han Dynasty to the two Jin Dynasties and the northern and Southern Dynasties, it was under the jurisdiction of Nan'an county (now Leshan City) of Qianwei county;
In the first year of Baoding (561 A.D.), Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty officially established the county of pingqiang.
In the third year of kaihuang (583), the name was changed to Emei County, and pingqiang county was established 60 Li to the east of the county;
In 589, Emei county was renamed Qingyi county;
In 593 ad, it was renamed Emei County, belonging to Meishan County.

In 1953, after the four departments of Sichuan (West Sichuan, South Sichuan, North Sichuan and East Sichuan) were incorporated into the province, they belonged to Leshan special area (later renamed Leshan area).
In 1956, YUELIAN township of Jiajiang County was divided into Emei county.
In 1958, Fushi Township and Pingcheng township of Leshan county were designated into Emei county.
In 1984, Xinnong, Xinhe, Xingou and Xinyan villages in Xinnong township of Leshan City (county level) were designated into Emei county.
In June 1985, Leshan Prefecture and county level Leshan City were abolished, and a provincial Leshan City was established. Emei county was subordinate to Leshan City.
In September 1988, Emei county was abolished and Emeishan City (a county-level city under provincial jurisdiction) was established, which was managed by Leshan City.

In December 2019, Sichuan Provincial People's government agreed to abolish Shengli Town, Eshan Town, Chuanzhu Town, Xinping Town, Puxing Township, Ledu town and Shaxi Township, and set up Eshan street and Shengli Street.
As of June 2020, Emeishan City has jurisdiction over two streets, 10 towns and one township: Shengli Street, Eshan street, suishan Town, Gaoqiao Town, Luomu Town, Jiuli Town, Longchi Town, Fuxi Town, Shuangfu Town, guihuaqiao Town, Dawei Town, huangwan town and Longmen town. Emeishan Municipal People's government is located in Shengli Street.
