In the Northern Song Dynasty, Yongchuan County belonged to Changzhou; in 1001, Yongchuan county was subordinate to Zizhou road; in 1118, the first year of Chonghe, song Zhengzong, Yongchuan county was subordinate to tongchuanfu road. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the Chongqing Sichuan military government merged and established the Sichuan governor's office, which was set up by Chongqing Zhenfu, and Yongchuan was subordinate to it; in June, Chongqing Zhenfu was abolished, and Yongchuan county was directly subordinate to Sichuan governor's office.

On March 9, 1992, Yongchuan county was abolished and Yongchuan City (county level) was established.
