Dongxihu District, subordinate to Wuhan City, Hubei Province, is located on the left bank of the Yangtze River and in the northwest of Wuhan city. Before reclamation, it was under the jurisdiction of Hanyang (now Caidian District), Hanchuan, Xiaogan, Huangpi and four counties.
In the spring of 1957, with the approval of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the "east west lake reclamation project headquarters of Hubei Province" was established. Zhang tixue, governor of Hubei Province, was appointed as the chief commander and political commissar. In September of the same year, more than 10000 voluntary workers, more than 30000 farmers in 18 counties of Xiaogan and Huanggang special districts, and more than 70000 farmers in 11 counties of Henan Province were mobilized to participate in the reclamation project. It was officially started in November 1957. In December of the same year, with the approval of the State Council, Hubei provincial organization committee formally approved the establishment of "Wuhan state farm administration bureau".
In October 1958, the administrative system of Dongxihu District was set up in Wuhan, and the system of combining district and bureau was implemented.
In February 1961, Wuhan state-owned Dongxihu farm was established. In June, it was changed to Wuhan state owned Dongxihu Farm Management Bureau.
In April 1973, the district was restored and the system of integration of district and bureau was restored. In 2010, Wujiashan Economic Development Zone in Dongxihu District was approved by the State Council and upgraded to a national economic and Technological Development Zone.

In March 1958, after the completion of the main reclamation project of Dongxihu lake, 15 farms were set up successively, all of which were under the system of government enterprise integration and performed Township functions. From 1960 to 1965, the 15 farms were integrated into 10 farms and aquaculture farms, including Wujiashan, cihuidun, Zoumaling, Xingou, hebaohu, Xinandu, Dongshan, Baiquan, Jinghe and Sandian. In September 1966, the bank was built on yinlian Lake in Dengnan District of Hanyang County, and reclamation was carried out around the lake. Vegetation conditions
Dongxihu area belongs to the mixed forest belt of evergreen and deciduous, broad-leaved and coniferous in the middle subtropical zone. Wujiashan, Baiquan and other mountainous areas have a long history of natural vegetation development. Woody plants are distributed in ridges, hills, villages and roadsides. The main tree species are: pine, cypress, camphor, Melia azedarach, Robinia pseudoacacia, willow, Italian poplar, maple poplar, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, elm, Paulownia, Toona sinensis, etc. Before reclamation, most of the area was lake area, which was dominated by hygrophytes and aquatic plants. Along the Hanjiang plain, the terrain is slightly higher, and the natural vegetation is mainly Phragmites australis and silver grass.
