Historical evolution
Before the 11th year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1861), the Bank of the river was an open land in the lower reaches of Hankou town.
In 1861, Xianfeng opened a port for trade on the river bank. Britain, Germany, Russia, France, Japan and other countries successively opened up concessions in the area under their jurisdiction. From Jianghan Road, along Zhongshan Avenue, down to liujiaqi Road, and then from Jianghan pass to the riverside of liujiaqi Road, the area of 3600 meters along the river, covering an area of about 2.2 square kilometers, became the concession area. After that, the concessions continued to expand and cross the border. Seventeen countries successively went to the river bank to do business, set up factories, preach and run schools. Many foreign banks, banks, factories and docks were built. Banks and banks representing the capital interests of Chinese bureaucrats were also set up inside and outside the concession. Jiang'an has become the political, economic, cultural, financial, information center and transportation hub of Wuhan. During the concession period, modern public utilities such as electric lights and telegrams first appeared in Jiangan District, which became the starting point of Wuhan's urban modernization.
In 1864, dazhifang was set up on the Bank of the river.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Beijing Han railway and Yangtze River shipping set up riverside stations and docks on the north bank, which is now known as the riverside area.
On October 10 of the third year of Xuantong (1911), the Wuchang Uprising broke out, and the Qing government urgently ordered the Beiyang army to "suppress" it. In order to defend the achievements of Shouyi, on October 18, 1911, the Yangxia war broke out at liujiamiao station in Jiangan area. Although the battle ended in failure, it dragged the main force of the Qing army to Hubei for 40 days, which won precious time for the independence of the provinces. All the areas south of the Yangtze River were occupied by the revolutionary army, forming a confrontation between the north and the South with the Qing government, and the Qing government's rule in China collapsed.
On February 4, 1923, the General Union of Jinghan railway announced the implementation of the general strike of the whole railway. 20000 workers on the whole line of Jinghan railway went on strike one after another. The "February 7th" general strike, the climax of the first national labor movement, began. The strike lasted for three days and was suppressed by Wu Peifu, a warlord. 35 workers died and more than 200 workers were injured, which led to the famous February 7th massacre.
On August 7, 1927, the 16th year of the Republic of China, the CPC Central Committee held the famous "August 7 meeting" in the history of the CPC. He corrected and ended Chen Duxiu's Right opportunism mistake, determined the general policy of agrarian revolution and armed resistance against Kuomintang reactionaries, and the Chinese revolution entered the period of the second Civil Revolutionary War. At this meeting, Mao Zedong put forward the famous thought of "political power comes from the barrel of a gun", which pointed out a new way for the Communist Party of China, which was in ideological confusion and lax organization, and made great contributions to saving the party and the revolution.
In 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, all the concessions were taken back and changed into special areas.
After the liberation of Wuhan in 1949, Jiangan administrative region was established on the basis of the original four districts of Zhongshan, Dazhi, Hanjing and Heping.
In 1953, Jiang'an District People's Committee was established. Some areas of Huangpi are included.
In 1968, Jiang'an was changed into Erqi District.
In 1980, Jiang'an District was restored to Wuhan.
