From 1996 to 1998, nanluji Township, goucunji Township, baifutu Township, boleji Township and Sunsi Township were removed and built into towns respectively. In 2001, with the approval of the provincial government, 18 townships were merged into 12 townships: Zhilou township was merged into jiunvji township; taohuasi township was merged into Datian township; Baofeng township was merged into Wenshang township; Kangji township was merged into tiangongmiao township; gaodingji township was merged into Xiaoji, qianchenzhuang, maowa, Songzhuang, danqiao, qianlizhuang, yandui, DanZhuang, Chunji, Lizhuang, xielou, etc The 13 administrative villages of xiaoyanzhuang and qianwangzhuang are included in Sunsi town. In February 2002, jiunvji township was abolished and jiunvji town was established. In 2003, Zhenghe and bachen administrative villages of tiangongmiao town were divided into Chengwu town. In March 2005, Chengwu County Economic and Technological Development Zone was set up. The development zone covers 11 administrative villages (neighborhood committees), 34 natural villages with 12000 people, covering an area of about 12 square kilometers. In March 2006, Chengwu economic and Technological Development Zone was renamed Chengwu Industrial Park. By the end of 2008, there were 10 towns in Chengwu County, including Chengwu Town, wenshangji, baifutu, datianji, Sunsi, jiunvji, nanluji, boleji, tiangongmiao and goucunji, 2 townships of Zhanglou and Dangji, and an industrial park. There are 476 administrative villages, 10 neighborhood committees and 1317 natural villages.
In June 2010, the Department of civil affairs of Shandong Province issued a document approving the abolition of Dangji Township and Zhanglou Township in Chengwu County and the establishment of Dangji town and Zhanglou town. This indicates that the economic and social development of the two townships has entered a new stage. The former Dangji Township covers an area of 63.8 square kilometers and has jurisdiction over 26 administrative villages, 69 natural villages and 35000 people.
