Shanghe county was originally known as Jihe County, which was established in the 16th year of kaihuang (596). Because of the flow of water, it is named Jihe county. In the first year of Yuanyou in Northern Song Dynasty (1086), Jihe county was changed into Shanghe county.

The fourth member of Shahejie formation of Eocene Kongdian Formation in Cenozoic is a set of thick sandstone and mudstone interbedding with a thickness of more than 2000 meters.
