In the sixth year of emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty (201 BC), Yuzhang county was set up and Jiancheng county was set up. Wanzai was built as a dependency. At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, Yuzhang county was changed into Jiujiang County, Jiancheng county was changed into Duoju County, and Wanzai belonged to Duoju county. In the first year of Jianwu (25 years) of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Yuzhang county was restored, and Jiancheng county was restored. During the period of Zhongping (184-189), Shangcai County was set up as a part of Jiancheng County, and Wanzai belonged to Shangcai County.
At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Wei, Shu and Wu were at the same time. Shangcai County was under the jurisdiction of Wu. During the reign of Huangwu in the Sun Wu Dynasty (222-229), a part of Shangcai County was divided into YangLe county and Luocheng county. This is the beginning of the county being listed as a county-level administrative unit.
In the first year of Taikang (280), YangLe county was renamed Kangle county.
In 589, Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty established Hongzhou, and Kangle county was merged into Jiancheng County, which was subordinate to Hongzhou. In the second year of Daye (606), Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty abolished the state and restored the county. Kangle still belonged to Yuzhang county.
In the fifth year of Wude (622), the county was changed to a state, Jingzhou was established, and YangLe county was reestablished. The county government was moved from Luocheng to the foot of Longshan (now Kangle town). In the seventh year of Wude, the name of the state changed from Mizhou to Junzhou, and YangLe was subordinate to Junzhou. In the eighth year of Wude, Junzhou was merged into Hongzhou, and YangLe was merged into Gao'an, belonging to Hongzhou.
During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Gao'an was under the jurisdiction of Wu regime of Yang xingmi. During the reign of emperor Tianyou (904-908), the king of Wu set up Wanzai farm in Wanzai township of Gao'an, belonging to Hongzhou. In the first year of Yang Wu Shunyi (921), Wanzai county was established in Gaoan, Kangle, gaohou and Wanzai. It still belongs to Hongzhou. The name of the county is Wanzai. In the tenth year of Baoda in the Southern Tang Dynasty (952), Hongzhou was divided into Junzhou, and Wanzai was subordinate to Junzhou.
In 975, Wanzai county was put under the jurisdiction of Yuanzhou. In 1121, Wanzai county was renamed Jiancheng County, still belonging to Yuanzhou. Gaozong Shaoxing first year (1131), renamed Wanzai County, under unchanged.
In the early years of emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty, Wanzai county was under the jurisdiction of Yuanzhou prefecture (Hunan Province). In the 19th year of the Zhiyuan Dynasty (1282), the state was changed to Lu, and Wanzai county was subordinate to Yuanzhou Lu, Jiangxi Province.
In the second year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1369), Lu was changed into Fu, and Wanzai county was still subordinate to Yuanzhou Fu.

After the revolution of 1911, Wanzai county was under the jurisdiction of Jiangxi military government. In 1914, the whole province was divided into four roads, and Wanzai County belonged to Luling road. In 1915, the road was abandoned, and each county was under the jurisdiction of the province. In 2001, the province was divided into 13 administrative regions, and Wanzai county was under the jurisdiction of the eighth administrative region. In 1924, the province was reduced to eight administrative regions, and Wanzai county was under the jurisdiction of the second administrative region.
During the agrarian revolution period (1927-1937), most of Wanzai county was a red Soviet Area, and a Soviet government was established under the jurisdiction of Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces.
On July 16, 1949 (June 21 of the lunar calendar), Wanzai was liberated, and the people's Government of the county was established on July 21. Wanzai county was under the jurisdiction of Yuanzhou District (the district was changed into a special district in September 1950). From February 1968 to the end of 1985, Yichun district was changed to Yichun District, and Wanzai county was changed to Yichun district.
