Tunxi District Tunxi District is the central urban area of Huangshan City in Anhui Province. It is located in Xiutun basin between Baiji Tianmu Mountain and Huangshan Mountain in the south of Anhui Province, where Hengjiang River, Liushui River and Xin'an River meet. The northeast and southeast are adjacent to Huizhou District and Shexian county respectively, and the rest are adjacent to Xiuning County. It has 4 streets and 5 towns, with a total area of 191 square kilometers, and 209 thousand and 700 registered residence population in 2019.
Tunxi is the center of Huizhou culture and Xin'an culture. It has bred famous Huizhou merchants, Hui cuisine, Hui opera, Hui style architecture, Hui style bonsai, Xin'an medicine, Xin'an painting school and so on. The key cultural relics protection units include Dai Zhen memorial hall, Cheng Dawei's former residence and memorial hall, Cheng's three houses, old bridge and so on. Tunxi Old Street is a national historical and cultural reserve. Folk arts include paper fireworks, drum fighting, lion hanging, local opera, pavilion lifting, swing, stilts, dragon boat, lion dance, dragon dance, etc. In November 2019, it won the title of "advanced zone in the medium term of law popularization in the Seventh Five Year Plan". In June 2020, it was awarded the title of "the third civilized city of Anhui Province".

Historical evolution
Tunxi has a long history. Ancient tomb relics of the middle Western Zhou Dynasty (10th century BC) were unearthed in the suburbs of Tunxi.

In 208, the 13th year of Jian'an in Han Dynasty, Sun Quan set up Liyang County in Tunxi.
In the third year of Tianjia (562), Emperor Chen Wen of the northern and Southern Dynasties withdrew Liyang County into Haining county (now Xiuning County), and Tunxi was the first town of Xiuning County.
On April 29, 1949, Tunxi was liberated and established as a city under the jurisdiction of the province. After that, Tunxi was withdrawn twice as a town.
In 1976, Tunxi city was restored. In November 1987, Huangshan City under provincial jurisdiction was established, and Tunxi was changed into a municipal district.

Tunxi District is located in the East Valley of Xiutun basin in the hills of Southern Anhui Province, with rolling hills on all sides. In the north, there are Huangshan branch Jinzhu mountain and Huangluo mountain as barriers. In the middle, there are River alluvial basins. In the southwest and Southeast, there are hills at the end of Baiji mountain. There are dozens of hills below 500 meters above sea level in the territory. The highest point is at the back of huangluojian Wenshan mountain, Sheling mountain range, with an altitude of 424 meters. The lowest point is wucunba, tunguang Town, with an altitude of 113.8 meters.

Liushui River and Hengjiang River enter from southwest and northwest respectively, converge under Zhenhai bridge to form Jian River (commonly known as Xin'an River), and leave at Wucun village. There are 29 rivers with a length of more than 1 km, all of which belong to the Xin'anjiang river system of Qiantang River Basin. Among them, there are 19 inflow rivers and 10 source rivers. The total length of the river is 126.16 km, and the river density is 0.8 km / km2. Affected by the topography of the basin, the rivers converge from the surrounding hills to the basin valley plain, and all converge to the Jian River (Xin'anjiang) and leave the country. The catchment areas of the three rivers are all over 900 square kilometers, followed by chashui River and qiayang River, with a catchment area of over 100 square kilometers.

There are abundant bentonite resources in Tunxi District. The proven reserves of Xintan bentonite mine are 114 million tons. It accounts for 96% of the total reserves in Anhui Province and 6% of the total reserves in China.
