Macao (Portuguese Macau, English Macao), referred to as "Macao", the Macao Special Administrative Region of the people's Republic of China, is located in the south of China and on the West Bank of the Pearl River Delta. It connects Gongbei, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province in the north, Wanchai and Hengqin in the west, Hong Kong and Shenzhen in the East. It is 60 kilometers away from the South China Sea. It is composed of Macao Peninsula, Taipa Island and Luhuan Island, with a land area of 32.8 square kilometers and a total population of 672000. (as of August 2019).
In 1553, the Portuguese obtained the right of residence in Macao. On December 1, 1887, Portugal formally occupied Macao through the formalities of diplomatic instruments. On December 20, 1999, the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macao. After more than 100 years of cultural collision between the East and the west, Macao has become a unique city, leaving a large number of historical and cultural sites. Macao's historic district officially became a world cultural heritage site of the United Nations on July 15, 2005.
Macao is an international free port, a world tourism and leisure center, one of the regions with the highest population density in the world, and one of the four major gambling cities in the world, with a capitalist system. Its famous light industry, tourism, hotel industry and entertainment field make Macao prosperous forever and become one of the developed and rich regions in the world.
