Historical evolution
In the Qin Dynasty, Fushun and Rongxian belonged to Bajun and Shujun respectively.
In the Han Dynasty, Qianwei county was established. Fushun Prefecture belonged to Jiangyang County of Qianwei County, while Rong County belonged to Nan'an County of Qianwei county. During the reign of emperor Zhang of the Eastern Han Dynasty, well salt was produced in Zigong area. The famous salt wells include Fushi well and Dagong well.
During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, counties and towns were set up because of salt. Fushi county was established in the name of fushijing, and Gongjing town was established in the name of dagongjing.
In the Tang Dynasty, Fushi county was renamed Fuyi County, and shenggongjing town was Gongjing County, subordinate to Rongzhou.
Song Dynasty, abandoned Gongjing County into Rongde county
In Ming Dynasty, Fuyi county changed its name to Fushun County, and Rongzhou was reduced to county. During the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, Fushun salt production center moved westward and new wells such as Ziliu were opened.
During the Anti Japanese War, the coastal areas were occupied, and Sichuan salt helped Chu again. In order to meet the needs of economic development and wartime military supplies, food and support the Anti Japanese War, the national government decided to set up cities. In August 1939, with the approval of Sichuan provincial government, the salt producing areas of the Fifth District of Fushun County and the Second District of Rongxian county were designated, which were taken from Liujing and Gongjing. On September 1 of the same year, Zigong municipal government was established and subordinate to Sichuan provincial government.
On December 5, 1949, Zigong City was liberated and subordinate to the South Sichuan administrative office.
In 1952, the southern Sichuan administrative office was revoked and subordinate to the people's Government of Sichuan Province.
In April 1978, all of Rong County and six communes in Heshi District of Fushun County were under the jurisdiction of Zigong City.
On March 3, 1983, the State Council approved that Fushun County in the former Yibin area should be put under the jurisdiction of Zigong City.

The rivers in Zigong belong to Minjiang River and Tuojiang River. Yuexi River and mangxi River in the West belong to the Minjiang River system, with a drainage area of 1207 square kilometers. The rest of the rivers belong to the Tuojiang River system.
