Body slender, slightly cylindrical, slightly convex dorsal ventral margin, tail tapering. The body length is about 16-24 cm, the head is long, the front end is pointed, the top and both sides are flat, and the ventral surface is narrow. Small mouth. The distance from the tip of the collar to the posterior edge of the operculum is equal. The distance between the eyes is wide and flat. The nostril is large and located in the anterior and upper part of the eye. The maxilla is sharp, triangular, and the central part is slightly linear. The mandible is elongated with a flat needle shaped beak. The teeth are small, with 3 cusps, arranged into a narrow band in both jaws. The branchial foramen are wide and the operculum is separated from the cheek. Scales round, thin and easy to fall off. The lateral line is very low, located on both sides of the body near the ventral margin; the lateral line scales are 102-112. The dorsal fin is 15-17, opposite to the gluteal fin, and its starting point is slightly in front of the gluteal fin. The gluteal fin is 16-18, which is the same as the dorsal fin. The base of gluteal fin is shorter than that of dorsal fin. Pectoral fins short and wide. Small ventral fin, ventral position. The caudal fin bifurcates. The body is silvery white with dark green on the back. There is a light black line in the center of the back from the back neck. There is a silver gray longitudinal band on each side of the body, and the head, upper and lower jaw are black. There are fine black spots on the base of pectoral fin and caudal fin.
It lives in shallow sea and estuary, sometimes in fresh water, and often jumps out of the water. It is distributed in China's coastal areas and the Yangtze River and other major rivers.
