Deciduous shrub, 1.5-4 m high. The bark is yellowish brown, flaking; the young branches are glabrous, reddish brown. Leaves opposite, elliptic ovate to lanceolate ovate, 5-11 cm long and 1.5-3.5 cm wide, apex acuminate or long acuminate, base broadly cuneate or suborbicular, margin serrate, sparsely white hirsute or glabrous above, white hirsute below, veins axillary and tufted with hairs, veins from base 5, main vein base and petiole often red or mauve. Raceme, 5-12 cm long, 5-11 flowers, 2.5-3 cm in diameter; calyx tube cup-shaped, 4-lobed, lobes triangular ovate, apex pointed; calyx tube and pedicel surface are densely covered with white short bristles; petals 4, broadly elliptic or broadly ovate, pure white; stamens numerous, outer whorl, stamens longer than inner whorl; style 4, nearly upper half separated, ovary inferior, 4-locular. Capsule obovate, 4-lobed; seeds numerous. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from August to September.
It grows on both sides of the valley or on the edge of the forest. It is distributed in Zhejiang, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou.
