[plant morphology] Cigu, also known as Jigu, Shuiping (bielu), Chaya (tangbencao), swallowtail (rihuazi Bencao), hefuzi, scissor grass (Bencao tujing), shuicizi and jiandacao (jiuhuangbencao).
It is a perennial aquatic herb with fibrous stolons. The ends of the stolons expand to form corms, from which new plants will be produced in the following spring. Leaves vary greatly, submersed narrow band shape, floating often ovate or nearly halberd shape, protruding halberd shape, 5-20 cm long, broad or narrow, apex blunt or short pointed, basal lobes more or less to both sides; petiole 20-40 cm long, triangular. The stem is 15-45 cm long, with 3-5 rounds of flowers in raceme or panicle, 3-5 flowers in each round, female flowers in the next round and male flowers in the upper round with slender stalk; bracts are short, short pointed or obtuse; flower diameter is about 1.8 cm; sepals are 3, ovate, obtuse; petals are 3, white, base is often purple, nearly round; stamens are many; carpels are many, gathered on the receptacle. Achenes obliquely obovate, apex short. The flowering period is summer and autumn.
