[plant morphology] Lythrum chinense
Herbs perennial, 30-100 cm tall, all pilose, sometimes glabrous. Stem erect, much branched, tetragonal. Leaves opposite or 3-whorled, narrowly lanceolate, 4-6 cm long, 8-15 mm wide, apex obtuse or mucronate, base rounded or cordate, sometimes slightly amplexicaul. Inflorescence terminal; flowers bisexual, several clustered in axils of leafy bracts; calyx tubular, 6-8 mm long, with 12 longitudinal edges, lobes 6, triangular, appendages linear, longer than calyx lobes, about 1.5-2 mm; petals 6, purple red, long elliptic, base cuneate; stamens 12, 6, long and 6 short; ovary sessile, 2-locular, style cylindrical, stigma capitate. Capsule elliptic, completely enclosed in calyx, 2-valved when heated; seeds numerous, small. The flowering period is from July to August.
It grows in tidal wetland and is often cultivated as an ornamental. It is distributed in most areas of China.
It is also used for medicine. The main differences between the two species are as follows: the stems and leaves are glabrous, the leaves are opposite and lanceolate; 3-5 flowers are integrated into short cymes, which are whorled in the axils of the leaves (bracts), and the appendages of the calyx are short, about 0.6 mm long. It is distributed in the north and northeast of China.
