[nature and taste]: the root is round and Huai shaped, thick at the top and thin at the bottom, 10-20cm long and 1-4cm in diameter. The surface is dark brownish red, the head of the root is usually coarsened by one or several rhizomes, the root is braided or twisted, and the skin often falls off and turns reddish brown. The quality is loose and crisp. The air is weak and the taste is bitter.

The leaves are simple, petiolate, triangular or elliptic, halberd shaped, thin oblong ovate, 6-12cm long, 3-7cm wide, apex acute or short acuminate, base halberd shaped or subcordate, margin coarsely serrated, covered with gray white villi. The inflorescence is terminal or axillary, with 2-4 flowers forming raceme; the bracts are ovate or elliptic, with villous on both sides, calyx bell shaped, glandular hairs on the outside, 2-lipped; the Corolla is purplish red, the tube is wide and short, flat, 2-3.5cm long, with hairy ring in the tube; the filaments are flat.
