[plant morphology] Putao (Luo Fu Zhi), also known as eaves wood, fragrant fruit, wind drum, water grape.
Evergreen trees, up to 10 m high. The crown is spherical and the bark is smooth and light brown. The leaves are oblong lanceolate, 10-20 cm long and 2.5-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire, distinct below the lateral veins, confluent to form a lateral vein near the margin. Corymb terminal, flowers green white, 4-5 cm in diameter; calyx obconic, lobes 4; petals 4, spoon shaped; stamens many, protruding beyond petals; style and filament net long. The fruit is spherical or oval, 2.5-4 cm in diameter, light green or light yellow, with persistent calyx, hollow fruit and 1-2 seeds. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is June.
They like to live near the water. It is cultivated in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian.

[collection] the fruits are harvested in autumn, cut into four pieces, seeded and dried in the sun.
[medicinal materials] the dried pericarp is irregularly rolled pulp like pieces, about 2.5-4 cm in length and 1.5-2 cm in width. The fruit is reddish brown or tan in appearance, dull and lusterless, shrunken and slightly wrinkled; the young fruit has obvious round punctate lenticels in appearance. The inner surface is light yellowish brown. The pericarp is about 1 mm thick, with persistent calyx at the top and slender dry style at the center, about 0.5-1 cm long. It is brittle and slightly tough when it is wet. The air is weak and the taste is light. Thick, yellow and dry meat is the best.
