[plant morphology] Cypripedium variegatum

Perennial herbs. No main stem. The rhizome is short and thick, clumpy, dark brown, with leaf base at the upper end; the roots are many, long and curved, up to 16 cm. The leaves are large, 2 opposite, with brownish purple spots on them; the leaves are nearly round, leathery, about 10 cm in diameter, slightly narrow at the apex, rounded at the base, entire, light colored below, without spots, glabrous on both sides, with many parallel veins; without obvious stalk. Flowers large, solitary, about 6 cm in diameter, yellow green, with purple spots, perianth margin hairy; perianth outer ring 3, dorsal piece broadly ovate, about 5 cm long, lateral piece 2, connate, oblanceolate; inner ring piece 3, labellum oblong, slightly cucullate, about 24 mm long. Pedicel about 5 cm long. It blooms in summer.

It was born in high mountain area. It is distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and Hubei.
