Evergreen climbing vine with special aroma. Stem gray, slightly flat, jointed, with longitudinal furrow on the surface; branches usually bifurcate, with adventitious roots at the joints. The leaf blade is narrow ovate to ovate, 5-8.5 cm long and 2.8-4.5 cm wide. The apex is long sharp or cusp, the base is round, entire, slightly thick, dark green on the top, light green on the bottom, often scattered with white soft hairs, 5-7 veins. Spikes on shoot, opposite to leaves, 2-8 cm long, 2.5-3 mm in diameter, pendulous; flowers unisexual, dioecious; without perianth, bracts shield shaped; stamens 3, rarely 2, anthers 2-locular; pistil 1, ovary superior, 1-locular. Berries 3-4 mm in diam., red when ripe. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from August to September.
In the woods of the coast or deep mountains. It is distributed in Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong and Taiwan.

[medicinal material] the stem of the dried vine is long cylindrical and flat, slightly curved, 15-60 cm long and 3-7 mm in diameter. Rough surface, grayish brown or brown, with longitudinal texture. The internodes were 4.5-9 cm long, and the adventitious roots were different in length. In the cross section, the phloem is narrow, and the xylem and rays are arranged alternately and radially. The xylem is grayish yellow with many small holes, and the rays are grayish white. There are small holes at the junction of xylem and phloem, so there are small holes in the edge of the cross section, forming a ring, and grayish brown pith in the center. It is light and brittle. It is fibrous when broken. It is fragrant and pungent. It is better to have strong, uniform and fragrant stems.
It is mainly produced in Fujian, Zhejiang and Taiwan.
In Zhejiang, Fujian, Hunan and other places, the stems of shanshao are still used as sea breeze vines.
