[plant morphology] Gesneriaceae (compendium)

Herbs annual to biennial, 50-100 cm high. Stem erect, hollow, with milk; base glabrous, apex and upper part or with sparse glandular hairs. Leaves alternate; oblong oblong broadly lanceolate, 15-28 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, feathering or violin feathering, margin with irregular spines; basal leaves with short stalks, upper leaves sessile, auricular amplexicaul. Inflorescences several, terminal, ca. 2 cm in diameter. Involucral bract cylindric, 12-15 mm long, with exfoliative silky hairs at the base, inner bract linear lanceolate, apex sharp, with sparse long hairs; flowers all ligulate, yellow; stamens 5; ovary inferior, style slender, stigma 2-cleft. Achene obovate elliptic, flat, each side in addition to 3 obvious longitudinal lines, and there are rough horizontal lines, red brown after maturity. The hair is white and soft. The flowering period is from April to June.

It grows on roadsides and fields and distributes in most areas of China.

[chemical constituents and pharmacological effects] the whole herb (produced in Australia) contains anti-tumor components. On the 6th day after sarcoma-37 was inoculated into the thigh muscle of mice, the acid extract of Sophora flavescens was injected subcutaneously. After 6-8 hours, the mice were killed.
