Luancheng district is located in the west of the central Hebei Plain, southwest of Hebei Province, Southeast of Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital. Luancheng district is adjacent to Gaocheng District in the East, Zhao county in the south, Luquan district and Yuanshi County in the west, Qiaoxi District and Yuhua District in the north, and 320 km from Beijing in the north. The total area is 345 square kilometers.

Luancheng belongs to the North China stratigraphic region, the North China Plain, and the southernmost part of the Jizhong stratigraphic region. The tectonic position belongs to the transitional zone between the Hehuai platform syncline and the Shanxi platform uplift in the North China platform. The Taihang piedmont fault passes through the county and crosses the Lincheng Yuanshi monocline and the Baixiang Zhaoxian sag. In addition, Gaoqian Nianlipu fault, Macun suqiu fault and Yuanshi Chencun fault control the extension, distribution and burial conditions of Yincun coalfield in Yuanshi County to the East.
Luancheng was once a shallow sea in Late Proterozoic. It became land in the late Proterozoic. Later, it was shallow sea and then land, forming coal bearing strata of coastal swamp facies. From Permian to Triassic, it was a continental alluvial proluvial basin, which received thick red sandstone and mudstone deposits. Since the Jurassic, the orogeny intensified, the Gaoyi Gaocheng fault formed, rising in the West and falling in the East, accompanied by volcanic activity. The Wuji County volcano erupted, forming nearly 1000 meters thick volcanic lava, which spread to Luancheng. From the Neogene, Luancheng area was all in the subsidence area of crustal movement, and received the alluvial proluvial strata more than 1000 meters thick, forming today's Piedmont inclined plain.
Luancheng is located in the south of the Piedmont inclined plain at the eastern foot of Taihang Mountain. It is composed of the southern edge of Hutuo River alluvial fan, the northern part of Huaisha River alluvial fan and its Inter fan depressions. The terrain is gently inclined from northwest to Southeast, with an altitude of 45-66 meters. The slope is generally one thousandth, and the terrain is flat. The landform can be divided into strip wavy highlands and lowlands, with a relative elevation difference of 1-2m.
