Sangzhi County, belonging to Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, is located in the northwest border of Hunan Province. It borders Cili County, Shimen County and Wulingyuan District in the East, Yongding District and Yongshun County in the south, Longshan County in the west, Xuanen county and Hefeng County in Hubei Province in the north. Badagongshan primeval forest, the first National Nature Reserve in China and Hunan Province, is included in China's "man and Biosphere Reserve (mAb)" and "one of China's 17 key biodiversity regions of global significance", as well as one of the world's 200 important ecological regions. Historical evolution
Sangzhi County has a long history. The unearthed cultural relics prove that primitive human activities existed along the coast of louli in the Paleolithic period as early as 30000-100000 years ago, and that clans were formed in the Neolithic period.
Sangzhi is called ancient Southwest Yi land in ancient historical records. Xia and Shang belong to Jingdi, Western Zhou belongs to Chu, spring and autumn belong to Cigu County, Chu Wu County. From Western Han Dynasty to Song Dynasty, Sangzhi successively belongs to Chong county, Tianmen County, linli County, Chongyi County, Cili County, etc.
During the reign of emperor Renzong of Song Dynasty, Sangzhi carried out the chieftain system and set up the Xuanfu department. Due to the division of sangzhiping named (now wudaoshui town bamaoxi territory).
The yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties inherited the song system. In 1727, they changed their land to Liu, and in 1729, they set up Anfu county. Thirteen years (1735) renamed Sangzhi County, under the Chen Yuan Yongjing road Yongshun house.
Yongshun Prefecture was abolished in 1914, which belonged to Chenyuan road of Hunan Province. In 1922, Yongshun Prefecture was abolished, which was directly under the central government of Hunan Province.
During the second Civil Revolutionary War (1928-1935), the Communist Party of China established Sangzhi Soviet Area, which belongs to the revolutionary base areas of Western Hunan and Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou. In October 1984, guandiping township government of Liangshuikou township was transformed into a town. In May 1985, jinzang township was newly built. In May 1986, Tianzishan town was established as a tourist scenic spot. In September 1984, seven Bai nationality townships were established, namely liujiaping, Ruitapu, mahekou, furongqiao, hongjiaguan, ZOUMAPING and maidiping.
In December 1988, there were 47 townships in 7 districts (including 7 Bai townships, Liyuan and Tianzishan directly under the central government), 2 forest farms, 1 agricultural reclamation farm and 1 agricultural seed farm. Dayong city was established in 1988, and Tianzishan town was assigned to Wulingyuan District.

In 1995, Sangzhi County withdrew its districts and built towns into townships. Seven district offices, namely Chengjiao, Ruitapu, guandiping, Liangshuikou, Chenjiahe, wudaoshui and liaojiacun, were abolished, and 45 townships were merged into 8 townships and 8 towns.
In October 1998, 16 townships were divided into 38 townships.

Restricted by Bamianshan fold, the terrain inclines from northwest to Southeast, and is widely distributed in middle and low mountains. The strata in the county are mainly middle Triassic, lower Cambrian and lower Sinian, mainly Triassic and Silurian. Wuling mountain range is divided into three branches from Yunwu Mountain in Guizhou. Its north and middle branches extend to the whole Sangzhi area, forming 40 main mountains. Most of them are northeast southwest trending, with 10426 mountain tops.
