Historical evolution
Built in the early Qing Dynasty
Madian mosque is one of the famous ancient mosques in Beijing, which has a long history. The construction of Madian mosque is closely related to the Muslim people living in Madian. The area of Madian street in Haidian District of Beijing has been inhabited by Muslims since the Ming Dynasty. Historically, as early as the Ming Dynasty, most Muslim people in Beijing were engaged in cattle and sheep business. In the early Qing Dynasty, the cattle and sheep trade in Beijing was further developed. Judging from the history of the development of Islam in Beijing, "where the Hui people live in large numbers, there are no temples for bathing, pilgrimage, preaching and teaching.". Because of the large number of Muslims in Madian area, mosques were established in Madian area as early as the reign of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty. According to the stone inscriptions of the Qing Dynasty kept in the temple, "there is an old Muslim temple outside the Desheng Gate of the capital, which was founded during the reign of Emperor Kangxi and is a place for Muslims to worship.". It can be seen that Madian mosque was one of the famous mosques in Beijing in the Qing Dynasty.
New construction in the Republic of China
In the early years of the Republic of China, the Muslim women's temple was established in Xicun. Xicun women's mosque not only has a worship hall and a water room, but also has a well. The three rooms in the south room are for the study of Confucian classics and also for the female imams. This "female Imam" was Hu Shi Niang who was invited by the villagers in Madian area at that time. "Hu Shi Niang preached and worshipped for female Muslims in the newly built Muslim women's temple. At that time, the old Hui women and young women from Madian area and surrounding areas all went to the West Village Muslim women's temple to worship.
Renovation and reconstruction
In 1982, Madian mosque recovered its property, resumed normal religious activities, and hired Imam to preside over the educational affairs of Madian mosque. The mosque of Madian was occupied by the factory and the main hall of worship became the factory building. After the implementation of the religious policy, although it was repaired many times, it was still not suitable for Muslim worship. In order to make the Madian mosque an ideal place of worship for the majority of Muslims, since 1989, the villagers in Madian area have raised funds to rebuild the main hall of worship and the north and South lecture halls, relying on the self-supporting income and the income of the mosque, so as to make the hundred year old Temple full of youth and welcome the arrival of Muslims with a new look. The Muslim women's temple in Xicun was also handed over to the Muslims in Madian Xicun in 1980. Later, according to the requirements of the local Muslims, it was transformed into a nursery for the Muslims in Madian.
