Yancheng, a prefecture level city in Jiangsu Province, is one of the 27 cities in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta. It is located in the east coastal area of China, in the middle of Jiangsu Province, adjacent to the Yellow Sea in the East, Nantong in the south, Yangzhou and Taizhou in the southwest, Huai'an in the northwest, and Lianyungang across the Guanhe River in the north.
Yancheng has a total land area of 16931 square kilometers, including 4553 square kilometers of coastal beaches. It is the only world natural heritage site in Jiangsu Province and the habitat of migratory birds in the yellow (Bohai) sea of China. Historical evolution
Before the Western Zhou Dynasty, it was "Huaiyi". In the fourth year of Yuanshou (119 BC), Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, Yandu County was built. In 411, the seventh year of Yixi reign of emperor an in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Yancheng was renamed as Yancheng because of "all the salt fields around the city". In the northern and Southern Dynasties, Sheyang County was set up first, and then Yancheng county was changed. At the end of the great cause of the Sui Dynasty, Wei Che, the leader of the Jianghuai peasant uprising army, called Wang Lishe Prefecture according to Yancheng, which was divided into Sheyang, Xin'an and Anle counties. In the early Tang Dynasty, the state of Shezhou was abandoned and Yancheng county was restored to Chuzhou; in the first year of Qianyuan (758), Yancheng supervisor was set up to manage the salt affairs of Chuzhou. In Song Dynasty, Yancheng belonged to Chuzhou. In the Yuan Dynasty, it belonged to Yangzhou road and Huai'an road. It belonged to Yangzhou and Huai'an in Ming and Qing Dynasties. During this period, Funing County was established in 1731, and Dongtai county was established in 1768.
During the period of the Republic of China, it belonged to Huaiyang road first, and then to the province. There were the tenth administrative supervision district of Jiangsu Province, Yancheng administrative supervision district of Jiangsu Province, and the sixth administrative supervision district of Jiangsu Province. It governed Yancheng County, Dongtai County, Funing County, Xinghua County, and was located in Yancheng county. In October 1940, the New Fourth Army and the Eighth Route Army joined forces in SHIZIKOU, Baiju, and established the central China headquarters. After the southern Anhui Incident, the New Fourth Army rebuilt its headquarters in Yancheng. In September 1941, Yanfu district administrative office was established. It has jurisdiction over seven counties of Yancheng, Yandong, Jianyang, Funing, Fudong, Huai'an and Lianshui, and lianguanfu border region office. The next year, lianguanfu border area was rebuilt into Sheyang and Binhai counties. At the end of October in 1947, Yancheng was liberated.

On January 11, 1950, Dongtai and Taibei counties of the former Taizhou district were assigned to Yancheng district. In the same year, Liandong county was abolished and Lianshui County was merged into Huaiyin District. On July 11, 1951, Taipei County was renamed Dafeng County and Jianyang County Jianhu County. On January 1, 1953, the people's Government of Jiangsu Province was established and set up Yancheng special zone. Yancheng District has jurisdiction over Yancheng, Huai'an, Binhai, Funing, Sheyang, Jianhu, Dafeng and Dongtai counties. In 1954, Huai'an county was assigned to Huaiyin special area. In 1966, Xiangshui county (located in Xiangshui town) was separated from the area north of Zhongshan River in Binhai County. Yancheng District governs 8 counties.
In May 1971, Yancheng district was renamed Yancheng area, which still has jurisdiction over Yancheng, Xiangshui, Binhai, Funing, Sheyang, Jianhu, Dafeng and Dongtai counties.
In 1983, Yancheng Prefecture and Yancheng county were abolished and Yancheng City under provincial jurisdiction was established.

Yancheng city is a plain landform, with high altitude in the northwest and Southeast, low-lying in the middle and northeast. Huanghuai Plain is located in the north of the main irrigation canal in Northern Jiangsu Province. The terrain of Huanghuai Plain takes the abandoned Yellow River as the central axis and gradually declines to the northeast and Southeast. The highest altitude of the abandoned Yellow River is 8.5 meters, and the lowest one along the Sheyang River in the southeast is only about 1 meter. Lixiahe plain is located in the south of North Jiangsu irrigation canal and the west of Chuanchang river. It is a part of Lixiahe plain, with a total area of more than 4000 square kilometers. The plain is high around and low in the middle, with the lowest altitude of only 0.7 meters. The coastal plain is located to the south of the irrigation canal and to the east of the Chuanchang River, with a total area of more than 7000 square kilometers, accounting for about half of the total area of the city. The plain area slopes slowly from southeast to northwest. The terrain in Dongtai is relatively high, generally between 4 m and 5 m above sea level, and gradually decreases to the north, reaching 1 m to 1.5 m at Sheyang River.

In Yancheng City, there are 12 large rivers more than 50 km long, with many lakes, ponds and ponds. The main rivers are the Huaihe River system. Radial sand ridges, also known as radial sandbanks, are distributed in the coastal periphery between the south of Sheyang estuary and lvsigang, Qidong County, Nantong city. On July 5, 2019, the Ministry of ecology and environment of the people's Republic of China announced the special investigation of black and odorous water in the first stage of overall planning and strengthening supervision in 2019. Yancheng was listed in the "list of cities with less than 80% black and odorous water elimination proportion", and the elimination proportion was 40%. On July 5, 2019, China's yellow (Bohai) sea migratory bird habitat (phase I) was listed in the world heritage list.
