Jiayuguan, a prefecture level city in Gansu Province, is an important node city of Gansu section of the Silk Road Economic Belt approved by Gansu Provincial People's government, a provincial sub central city, and an important national metallurgical and advanced manufacturing base. As of 2018, it has jurisdiction over three streets and three towns, with a total area of 2935 square kilometers, a permanent resident population of 252000 and an urban population of 236000.
Jiayuguan is located in Northwest China, northwest Gansu and the middle of Hexi corridor. It is adjacent to Jiuquan Suzhou District in the East, 650 kilometers away from Lanzhou in the southeast, Jiuquan Yumen City in the northwest, 650 kilometers away from Hami in Xinjiang in the northwest, Qilian Mountain in the South and Zhangye Sunan Yugur autonomous County in the south, Jiuquan Jinta County in the north, and Jiuquan oasis in the middle.
Jiayuguan is the hub of the ancient Silk Road, the starting point of the western end of the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty, and the emerging industrial tourism modern regional central city arising from the construction of Jiuquan Iron and steel company, a key project of the first five year plan of the state. It is known as the "frontier key". Because it is the location of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Group, the largest iron and steel complex in Northwest China, it is called "Gobi steel city".
In November 2016, Jiayuguan City was rated as the second batch of national global tourism demonstration zones by the National Tourism Administration; in November 2017, Jiayuguan City was rated as a national civilized city; in November 2018, Jiayuguan City was selected as the top 100 cities in China's overall well-off index; in June 2020, Jiayuguan City was selected as the first batch of national demonstration areas and projects for the construction of rule of law government.
Historical evolution
Jiayuguan is the traffic hub of the ancient "Silk Road" and the starting point of the western end of the Great Wall in Ming Dynasty. It is the intersection of Chinese Silk Road culture and Great Wall culture, known as the "lock and key" of the border.
Here, the "ancient Silk Road" of economic and cultural exchanges between China and the west, which was opened more than 2000 years ago, and the "ancient battlefield" of military strategists of past dynasties can be seen.
Jiayuguan is a new modern city with the construction of Jiuquan Iron and steel company, a key construction project of the first five year plan. It was named after Jiayuguan, the terminal point of the great wall of Ming Dynasty in the urban area. It originally belonged to Jiuquan county.
In 1955, Jingtieshan Iron Deposit was discovered in Sunan.
In 1958, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. was established, mainly in the original towns, with Jiuquan county and Sunan County partially under its jurisdiction, and Jiayuguan Preparatory Committee of Gansu Province was established.
In 1965, the city was established. In 1971, it was approved as a provincial city by the State Council.

On December 1, 2009, Jiayuguan city established three administrative districts, namely Xiongguan District, Changcheng district and JINGTIE District, which belong to the county-level administrative district established by Jiayuguan City. It is the agency of Jiayuguan Municipal People's government and is equivalent to the development zones established by various localities, rather than the municipal jurisdiction of the local people's Government approved by the State Council and approved by the Ministry of civil affairs.
In 2019, Jiayuguan governs Xincheng Town, Yuquan town and Wenshu Town, Xiongguan District, JINGTIE district and Changcheng district (30 community committees and 17 villager committees in total).
In July 2019, Jiayuguan City held the inaugural meeting of Xiongguan sub district Party Working Committee (sub district office), Gangcheng sub district Party Working Committee (sub district office) and suburban Party Working Committee (suburban Work Office), and Xiongguan District, Changcheng district and JINGTIE district were abolished.
In December 2019, according to the "reply on Approving the establishment of Xiongguan sub district office and Gangcheng sub district office" issued by Gansu Provincial People's government, Xiongguan sub district office has jurisdiction over 17 urban communities with an area of 186.1 square kilometers, and the office is located at No. 5, Jianshe West Road; Gangcheng sub district office has jurisdiction over 14 urban communities with an area of 119.8 square kilometers, and the office is located in Yingcheng 1833 Bindong road; Jiayuguan suburban Party Working Committee (suburban Work Office) is responsible for managing and guiding the work of Yuquan Town, Xincheng town and Wenshu town.

The Taolai River traverses Jiayuguan City, with an average annual runoff of 658 million cubic meters, annual net groundwater reserves of 732 million cubic meters, annual recharge of 164 million cubic meters, annual allowable exploitation of 111 million cubic meters, and actual annual exploitation of 46 million cubic meters. There is also Dacaotan reservoir with a storage capacity of 64 million cubic meters for industrial water regulation. As of 2010, the comprehensive production capacity of urban water supply is 446000 cubic meters per day, and the surplus water supply capacity is 252000 cubic meters per day. The urban sewage treatment project with a daily treatment capacity of 50000 cubic meters has been put into operation.

Jiayuguan iron ore, barite, limestone, dolomite, modeling clay five kinds of minerals in Gansu Province ranked top three. As of 2012, Jiayuguan City has proved 21 kinds of mineral resources, with more than 40 producing areas, among which iron, manganese, copper, gold, limestone, mirabilite, molding clay, barite are dominant minerals. Jingtieshan mine has a total iron ore reserve of 483 million tons, which is the largest pit mining metallurgical mine in China; Xigou limestone mine has a reserve of 206 million tons, which is open-pit mining with an annual output of 800000 tons; Dacaotan molding clay has a total reserve of 98 million tons. Jiayuguan City is a new industrial city with large city and small countryside. It belongs to suburban agriculture and is an important non-staple food base in the city. The agricultural population of Jiayuguan City is 32800. In 2002, the per capita net income of farmers in Jiayuguan City was 3514 yuan. At present, there are 2840 hectares of cultivated land in rural areas, all of which are irrigated. The agricultural production conditions of villages, fields, roads, canals, electricity and communications are superior, realizing the irrigation of farmland, mechanization of operation, cultivation of improved varieties and scientific cultivation. It is an advanced agricultural area in Gansu Province. The rural per capita living area is 26 square meters, and 77.3% of the farmers live in spacious and bright well-off houses.
