Chenzhou is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province. The character "Chen" belongs to Chenzhou alone. It was first seen in the Qin Dynasty. It is a seal character "Chen". It is composed of two characters of Lin and Yi, which means "city in the forest". In the fifth year of emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty (202 BC), Guiyang County was set up in the southern part of Changsha County, which includes not only Chenzhou City (excluding Anren County), but also Leiyang City, Lanshan county and parts of northern Guangdong. In the fourth year of Yuanding (113 BC) of the Western Han Dynasty, Guiyang County had jurisdiction over 11 counties, including Chen, Linwu, Nanping (now Lanshan county), Bian (now Yongxing County), Leiyang, Guiyang (now Lianzhou City), Yangshan, Yinshan, Qujiang, Hanling and Zhenyang (all of the above five places are in today's Guangdong Province).

In November, Chenzhou City was upgraded to a county-level city and Dongjiang City, CHENXIAN County, was established.
