[plant morphology] Wutong
Small trees. The stem is about 30 cm thick and the bark is smooth. Leaves alternate, clustered in branches; tender leaves red, ovate or rhombic, apex caudate and acute, base round or broadly cuneate, mostly entire, shallowly 3-lobed, membranous, 15-18 cm long, slightly equal in width, scattered yellow glands below, smooth on both sides when old, convex on both sides of middle rib and lateral vein, leaf base with 2 nectaries; petioles long, covered with brown hairs. It is dioecious, with terminal conical spikes, densely hairy rachis, and the male inflorescence is longer than the female inflorescence; the male inflorescence is sparse, with 3-5-lobed calyx, no corolla, and many stamens; the female inflorescence is dense, with 3-5-lobed sepals, 2-4-locular ovary, 1 ovule per locule, and 2-4-divergent style. Capsule globose, spiny. The flowering period is June. The fruiting period is September (Jiangsu).
It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Taiwan.
[chemical] bark contains cabbage, leaves contain rutin, Wutong enol and its linolenic ester.
[pharmacological action] the water extract of leaves and rutin extracted from leaves can promote bile excretion (in dogs or rabbits) by intravenous injection of 20-200 mg / kg in appropriate amount, but a large amount is ineffective. Bergenin did not promote bile excretion and analgesia. The results showed that the water extract of the leaves could only be lethal by injecting 100 mg / 10 g into the abdominal lymph sac of frog, 100 mg / 10 g subcutaneously, 20 mg / 10 g intraperitoneally or 5 mg / 10 g intravenously in mice, so it had little toxicity. Water extract (15g / kg) can prevent pyloric ligation ulcer in rats and inhibit the increase of vascular permeability induced by histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and bradykinin. It can also inhibit the edema induced by dextran, 5-hydroxytryptamine, croton oil and formaldehyde in rats, but can not inhibit the edema caused by egg white; it can also reduce the number and volume of experimental calculi in rats' bladder, and increase the excretion of magnesium and calcium in urine.
