Evergreen trees, 5-10m high. The branches are dense; the bark is gray brown and the branchlets are ribbed. The leaves are leathery, elliptic ovate or elliptic, 8-12 cm long and 3-5 cm wide; dark green on the top, pale white below, smooth on both sides; 3-6 pairs of sparsely serrated margin above the middle, entire margin below; 9-14 pairs of pinnate lateral veins, slender, not visible; petiole 1-3 cm long. Male inflorescence spicate axillary, 8-15 cm long, male flowers milky white, fragrant; female inflorescence spicate axillary. The cupule is oblate, 8-10 mm in diameter, encircling the nut, with 5-6 rings attached, discontinuous and long, narrow and blunt scales, covered with dark fine hairs, dehiscing at maturity. Nuts conic, stigma exserted. The flowering period is May. The fruiting period is October.
Growing in hills or low mountain forests. It is distributed in Yunnan, Guangdong, Fujian, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, etc.
