Perennial herbs. Underground stem massive, creeping, thick. Aboveground stem erect, coarsely hairy. Inflorescence inserted near the tip, extracted near the leaf blade, solitary or to 5 inserted on a short stem; sepals 5, linear; petals 5, dark purple; stamens 6, filamentous, oblique, anthers 2-locular, longitudinal, inward; pistils 1, stigma capitate, ovary superior.
