[plant morphology] sarcandra rotundifolia

It is an annual herb, rooting on the ground, often in clumps. The stem is 5-30cm high, bald and reddish. Leaves opposite, sessile or shortly stipitate, orbicular, obovate to broadly oblong, 5-10 mm long, entire. Flowers are very small, less than 2 mm in length, nearly sessile, and solitary in bracts. They are terminal, dense spikes with 1-3 bracts, 1-4 cm in length. Bracts (i.e. flower leaves) are ovate or oblong, about as long as flowers. Calyx tube is bell shaped, teeth 4, triangular, short pointed. Petals 4, obovate, light purple red, about twice as long as calyx teeth. Stamens 4, pistils 1, ovary spherical and slightly flat, with flowers Column short, purple, stigma capitate. Capsule elliptic, longer than wide. The flowering period is April. The fruit period is from June to July.

It grows in paddy fields, ponds or extremely humid places. It is distributed in the south of the Yangtze River.
