Rattan shrubs, 8 m long. Young shoots often take root with the roots. The outermost pair of bud scales is persistent, with sharp and hard hooked spines, often climbing and hooking on trees. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate, slightly membranous, 3-5.5 cm long and 2-5 cm wide, with bristly teeth on the margin. Cymes axillary, 1-3-flowered, or more flowered in clusters; pedicels short, often less than 5 mm; flowers unisexual pale yellow, 5-numbered, calyx campanulate, 5-lobed; petals spoon shaped oblong; stamens of male flowers with filaments inserted on the edge of disk, ovary degenerated; pistil filaments of female flowers very short, ovary 3-locular, style columnar, stigma 3-lobed, split ends 2-deeply split, reflexed. Capsule globose, yellow green, 3-valved, 3-6 seeds, dark red. The flowering period is June. The fruiting period is October.
Born in the forest, river, stone slope. Distributed in Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Hebei, Shandong, Zhejiang and other places.
