[plant morphology] Elaeagnus angustifolia
Evergreen creeping or climbing shrubs, spinless, 5 m long, branchlets densely covered with rust colored scales. Leaves alternate, leathery; ovate elliptic, 5-7 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded, dark green above, yellowish brown or bronze below, with rust scales, 6-8 pairs of lateral veins. Flowers pale white, drooping, outside densely covered with rust colored scales, 3-7 gathered in leaf axils to form a short raceme; perianth tube funnel-shaped, thick, upper 4-lobed, lobes wide triangular, inner surface covered with white stellate villi; stamens 4; style erect, glabrous. Fruit elliptic, densely covered with rust scales, 1-1.4 cm long. It blooms in winter.
It grows in the bush of hills and mountains. It is distributed in Henan and other provinces in the Yangtze River Basin, and reaches Guangdong and Taiwan in the south.
The root or root bark (root of Elaeagnus angustifolia) and branches and leaves (cotyledon of Elaeagnus angustifolia) of this plant are also used for medicine. Please refer to the special section for details.
Elaeagnus angustifolia is still produced in Guangdong and other places. It differs from this species in the following aspects: flowers solitary; perianth tube quadrangular, contracted at the top of ovary, 4-lobed at the top; fruit with long stalk. Its function is basically the same as that of manhu.
