Small shrubs, 1-2m high. The branchlets are rough. Leaves alternate, leathery, lanceolate, oblong, elliptic or obovate, 1.5-5.5 cm long, apex obtuse or rounded or slightly concave, base cuneate, subentire or upper part slightly denticulate, both surfaces smooth and glabrous. Flowers small, unisexual, dioecious, axillary, usually bunched on short peduncles; sepals 5, suborbicular; petals 5; stamens 10; ovary 3-locular, style apex 3-lobed. Berry about 3 mm in diameter, purplish red, with 1 remnant style at the top. The flowering period is from March to April.
Born in the forest of low mountain area. It is distributed in Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places.
