The body length is about 28 cm. The male has a yellow bill. The iris is brown. The upper body, wings and tail are black; the lower body is black brown, the chin is decorated with brown feather edge, and the throat is slightly colored. Feet near black. Female beaks sometimes have brown ends. The upper body, wings and tail are dark brown, and the back is light; the chin and throat are light chestnut brown, mixed with dark brown longitudinal lines; the rest of the lower body is also dark brown, but slightly chestnut.
It inhabits in plain grassland or garden. Often galloping on the ground for food. It mainly feeds on insect larvae, such as caterpillars, larvae, maggots, earthworms, etc., and also eats wild fruit and weed seeds. It is distributed in South China mainland and Hainan Island.
