Plant morphology of Gracilaria
The algae are erect, tufted, 10-50 cm high, up to 1 m, purplish brown, sometimes slightly green or yellow, brown after drying, cartilaginous, linear, cylindrical, with a disk-shaped fixator at the base, generally with a trunk, 1-2 mm in diameter, 1-2 branches, alternate or slant in all directions, branch diameter 0.5-1 mm. The inner part of the algal body is the pith composed of large parenchymal cells, and the outer part is surrounded by 2-5 layers of gradually smaller cortical cells. The tetrasporangium is purplish red, scattered on the surface of algae, buried in the cortical cells, and divided in a crisscross pattern. The spermatocyst grows in shallow pits or in the depressed part of reproductive nest, with light yellow color. Utricle globose or hemispherical.
It grows best in the fertile and peaceful inner bay. It is distributed all over the coast of China.
