[plant morphology] Bauhinia (rihuazi materia medica), also known as mantiaohong (qunfangpu), wusang, luolanshu, zijinpan and pingtouweng.

Deciduous trees or large shrubs, up to 15 m in height. Branchlets glabrous, with many lenticels. Leaf blade nearly round, 6-13 cm long, 5.2-12.5 cm wide, base deeply cordate, apex acuminate, glabrous, entire; stipules rectangular, caducous. The first leaf of the flower is open, and 4-10 flowers cluster on the old branch; the calyx is bell shaped, with 5 blunt teeth on the upper edge; the Corolla is butterfly shaped, purplish red, and the petals are 5, with different sizes; the stamen is 10, separated, the base is attached to the calyx, and the filament is slender; the pistil is 1, the ovary is smooth and glabrous, with a stalk, the upper part of the style is curved, and the stigma is short and flat. The pods are oblate, reddish purple, slightly constricted and short beaked at the top, winged and reticulate along the abdomen. Seeds round and flat, near black. The flowering period is May.

[herbal medicine] the dried bark is long cylindrical or groovy pieces, which are curled inward, about 6-25 cm in length, 3 cm in width and 3-6 mm in thickness. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi and other places.

Raceme, 8-24 flowers, rose red, 15 mm long. The pod is short with 1-2 seeds (distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei and Shaanxi). Its root bark is also used as medicine.
