Evergreen shrub, about 2 m high. The root is stout, with curved branches and grayish yellow surface. Branchlets cylindrical, grayish brown, slightly angular; spines usually on 3 nodes, 6-21 mm long. Leaves 3-5 clustered, hard leathery, narrowly lanceolate to narrowly oblong ovate, 4-10 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, margin slightly retrovolved, spiny serrate, almost sessile. There are 20 florets clustered in leaf axils, bright yellow; petals 6, ovoid. Berry ovate oblong, stigma flat, persistent. It blooms in spring.
