[plant morphology] Ligustrum japonicum
Evergreen shrub, about 2 m tall. Branches brown or grayish brown, with many white lenticels, branchlets densely pubescent. Leaves opposite, oblong, ovate elliptic to ovate lanceolate, 4-8 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate or rounded, entire, leathery, glossy above, prominent below; petiole 3-12 mm long. Inflorescence is triangular conic, 5-12 cm long; flower is small, white, short peduncle; calyx is bell shaped, apex has 4 shallow teeth; corolla is 4-lobed, lobes are slightly shorter than corolla simple; stamen is 2, anther is long elliptic; pistil is 1, stigma is rod-shaped. Berry shaped drupe, long elliptic, slightly curved, purple black when hot.

[pharmacological action] the ethanol extract of Ligustrum japonicum leaves can increase the contraction amplitude of frog heart in vitro. Intravenous injection of Ligustrum japonicum leaves into cats can also enhance the contraction of heart (direct recording of in situ heart). Alcohol solution of resin like substance or alcohol extract of leaves can reduce blood pressure and constrict isolated rabbit ear vessels.
